The Dogo Canario
The Dogo Canarios, a.k.a Presa Canarios, are phenomenal family companions. Unfortunately, they are yet another breed that has fallen into the >>> hands of unethical dog owners who have mistreated them, improperly bred them, trained them for the wrong purposes, and used them for illegal activities. All of these things have contributed to the stained reputation that they (along with many other breeds we prefer to work with) possess. This breed of dog is a favorite of many people, as they have such outstanding traits.
It's believed that Presas have existed for approximately 400 years, having been brought to the Canary Islands by Conquistadors and Spanish Colonialists. They are now being bred all over the world and they are becoming more and more common in the U.S. The sad thing is though that breeders here (and of course all over the world) have the desire to have "rare colors" or be "extra large"..anything that they can use as a claim to fame (you also see this in many other rare breed mastiffs, such as Dogo Argentinos). Often this is just the breeder mixing another breed in the line so they can have markings that do not fit into the breed standard, or a supersized Presa. This is why, more often than not, you see Presas that do not meet the breed standard in one way or another. A small minority of Presa's in the U.S. population actually represent the "true" or "real" Presa.
Dogo Canario's are generally very sweet, very loyal, nurturing, silly family members. Although they can have an intimidating appearance, most Presas fit the term "gentle giant" very well. Some of them do have a predisposition to have a more dominant temperament with other dogs so it is important to take that into account when deciding whether or not a Presa is right for your home. It is generally best if they are to live with other dogs that they live with a dog of the opposite sex (and of course both dogs involved NEED to be altered!!).
It is just as important to be responsible with Presas with new situations and other animals until you have a great feel for his or her true personality. It is imperative to properly socialize your Presa throughout his or her life to make sure you end up with a happy, well-rounded, mushy, excellent representative of the breed! Given their strength and patience, they can be great with children...but remember, it is always important for children and animals to ALWAYS respect each other. These dogs are bred to have an instinct for protection, but many of them are just silly, sweet canine friends who will welcome strangers. It is just important to get to know the individual temperament of your Presa, or one you are considering adding to your home.
When a a Presa is properly placed in the right loving home, you will end up with a wonderful friend and companion. You will need to have a good understanding of the breed and their strength. You also need patience and a desire for a truly loyal companion who you are willing to devote time to. They are a very interactive breed of dog to have in your home, and will seek out attention and love as often as possible. They are very special dogs!!! If you are looking for a great friend as well as a dog who thrives on training and other bonding activities, then this breed may be ideal for you!!!If you are a fan of this breed, please join our mailing list specifically dealing with Presa rescue:
