The Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is one of the most amazing creatures ever put on this earth. They don't come any sweeter than these guys (I write this with one giving me kisses right now). Rottweilers are a purely remarkable breed. I enjoy working with them because they tend to be a breed that is fabulous with everything. I am sure this statement does not apply to every rottie in the world, however, every Rottie I have ever worked with (which is a lot) has always been a truly outstanding companion.
Never have I gotten one in that was not tolerant of any childs behavior, never have I gotten one wasn't completely devoted and in love with his/her handlers, or any other animals for that matter. Whenever I take a Rottie from a pound I feel confident that I have made a difference. Their ability to love and understand people is unmatchable. Rottweilers were originally bred as the butchers dog to guard and herd cattle, as well as the guard the butcher and his money..
Since the beginning of the breed, they have been used in military work, police work, service work, therapy dogs, and of course, what they are best at, being loving family companions. (Just on the news two weeks ago here in CT, a 6 month old Rottweiler saved an infant!) Anyone who has ever truly known a Rottweiler will only have positive things to say.
Rottweilers are typically black with markings that can be a light tan/rust color to a very dark mahogany color. They are typically short haired but some can have a longer coat than others. They usually have a docked tail, however more and more you see them without them, that is what they call "European Style," as Rotties in Europe usually keep their tails.
I think the best way I can describe a Rottweiler is by describing my two babies. I have two Rottweilers; Mae and Niko. These two are my pride and joy. Since they were babies (one I rescued at 5 weeks, and the other I have known since he was 8 weeks, but adopted him at 1 yrs. old from an animal control officer who couldn't keep him) they have always been very sweet and mellow. They never had a chewing problem, never had a problem housebreaking, never had a problem with anything... As they have grown, their energy level has pretty much stayed at very mellow and their purpose in life has always remained the same...to be with mom always and to always show lots of love. They will bark at passers by through the house window, but would NEVER be aggressive towards a human or animal. We go hiking a few times a week, which they LOVE. They love to go swimming, and they adore playing in the snow. They will bow down their heads and open their mouths and plow the snow! They not only know commands, but they have a true understanding of our communication. I can say with no reservations at all that Rottweilers are typically bombproof with all of the humans and animals in their homes. As I have said, this speaks for a large majority of them, however there are always exceptions to the typical breed behavior in any breed.
I recommend this breed only to people who really are looking for that strong bond that these dogs need. If they do not spend a lot of time with you and do not receive lots of love, they will not be happy puppies. It is not in their nature to be independent in any way. It is important because of the strong bond they develop with their owners that their owners share that bond. If you are looking for true love, adopt a rottweiler.Back to Breed List | The Dogo Argentino
